Happy Monday! It's a rare day for me to post on a Monday - but I had a bunch of random running related thoughts cruising around my brain so I figured I'd share! Plus...Little M and I are off to have a relaxing girls getaway with some friends this week! I'm so excited to have a change of scenery (especially for my runs!) AND for some awesome fun with one of my best friends!!
I'm done with my first 3 of 10 weeks of training for the Corpus Christi Harbor Half and I'm finally (finally!) feeling like myself as a runner again. I'm looking forward to the longer weekend runs and I'm having more good runs than bad. I even got to go for a 4 miler with my dad last week who was in town for the day! Running with him always makes my heart happy (and my legs tired!) This Saturday I was able to get out for a solo (plus Miss Oakley of course!) run while my husband and inlaws were home with Little M. It was a beautiful cool morning and I got 6 miles in pretty easily! My toes went numb around mile 4 though, I'm thinking my old shoes might be the culprit.
One of my favorite parts about that run was the fact that I listened to a podcast for the first time ever! A great friend of mine is completely obsessed with podcasts and listens all day long. Her enthusiasum was contagious and I decided to give it a go on a run! I LOVED it. Not only was the podcast really good, I loved having something to listen to that kept my attention throughout the run, rather than just listening to music. It was almost like running with a friend, except I didn't have to catch my breath to talk! I listened to Runners Connect based of a recommendation from Christine's post over on Love Life Surf. I loved loved loved Tina's English accent, and the interview was with Janae from Hungry Runner Girl blog and it was totally inspiring! My favorite takeaway from the podcast was when she said "Running will always be there for you". I really connected with that statement this weekend when I truly felt like running was there for me again. I decided to back off on running for a while this summer, but that doesn't mean my running is sabotaged forever. I did what I needed to do, and now that I'm ready for it, running is waiting for me! I love that! I also loved hearing about how she gets her training runs in as a single mama!
On another funny running note, I got an email from my dad last week that opened with: "Addiction (noun): the state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.". The email went on to say hi registered for yet another marathon. Isn't it funny how us runners just can't stop? But really, if you're going to be addicted to something, I can think of nothing better! Not only is running good for your body, it's good for your mind, your mood and your soul!
As I'm moving into October and some higher mileage weeks, I'm really working to remind myself to get plenty of core and strength work in. When I start race training I often only focus on the runs that I need to accomplish, and do far less when it comes to core strength. I can always tell I'm slacking when my lower back starts to bug me! Planks every night...here I come!
how about you?
What do you prefer on a run? Silence? Music? Podcasts? Audiobooks?
What's your favorite podcast? I need to build up my playlist!
