I was inspired to post this blog from "Race Pace Jess" from Race Pace Wellness. She has been a long time blogger role model for me and I love following all she has to say! She recently blogged about her year in running by answering a few questions. I thought I would answer the same ones here! You can read Jess' "Year of Running" HERE.
2013 was an interesting year in running for me. I didn't run a half marathon which was a big disappointment, but I did have some awesome 5Ks and 10ks! Outside of racing, I had the opportunity to run in California, Hawaii, Minnesota, Montana and all over Colorado. It has been a great way to explore my new town and I've even found a brand new friend and running buddy!
Best race experience: All of the races I ran this year were really fun, but my overall best race experience was the Channel Islands 4th of July 10K. It was at zero elevation which was amazing feeling for my 7,600 ft trained lungs and I PR'd by A LOT. There were amazing views, great people and delicious fresh pineapple at the finish line! It felt great to really push myself - and I rewarded myself with a dip in the Pacific Ocean!
Best run: This one was tough - I had so many great ones, and it's hard to remember them all from the last 12 months! I would have to say it was probably along the North Shore of Oahu at sunset. After a day of beach hopping and food truck sampling, it was the perfect way to end an amazing day. What I had thought would be a quick 2 miler turned into 4.5 because I just couldn't stop!
Best new piece of gear: Last year for Christmas I got the Garmin Forerunner and it has been my favorite new running buddy since then! Of course it's my favorite color green! It has been fun to be able to track my speed, distance, elevation and calories over the course of all of my runs. It's super easy to use and and even tells you when you've set a new record!
Best piece of running advice received: To shorten my stride. I had been dealing with hamstring/glute issues for over a year. When I started shorting my stride I became much more efficient and ran pain-free!
Most inspirational runner: Hands down Kristin Armstrong. She may not be a record breaking, world class, Olympic athlete, but her writing about running, God, family and life is regular source of inspiration for me. She is a great reminder of how much running parallels and prepares for you for life. I have read her book "Mile Markers" several times and am a regular follower of her posts on the Runners World website.
If you could sum up your year in a couple of words, what would they be? Go with the Flow. This year I really got less picky about perfect conditions, pre-run food, clothes and routes. I just ran when, how and where I wanted to run and it was really freeing! I also dealt with injuries where I had to really use "go with the flow" as a reminder that it's ok to slow down sometimes.
