Wow. I've started this post about 4 times. If someone has a trick to help me make a decision and stick with it, I would really appreciate it. Here's what's been going on. Basically, I was sick for almost 3 weeks. Only in the past few days have I really started to feel like myself again. And as of 24 hours ago, I wasn't registered for the Horsetooth Half. I had signed up 2 months ago, but apparently I had missed some info on the billing portion so they had not yet charged my card. Fate? Maybe? I teetered back and forth on if I wanted to go through with it, know that I am not even close to being trained. I decided that since I was still sick and I wasn't going to lose any money, that I was going to take the free "out" and not do the race. While slightly relieved, I was so, so sad about my decision. I really wanted to do the race!
My dad and I went out just for a fun run on Sunday and I realized that I was feeling much better running that I had expected. I had another night trying to make a decision (aka a 10pm phone call to my BFF letting her persuade me to run) and woke up with the decision to do it. And I'm SO EXCITED! Ironically, I woke up to this blog post on my Facebook feed...I hope my race is just as successful!
A friend of mine and fellow football wife/mother/runner Elaine told me about how she sets goals for each of her races and I decided to do something similar. It's hard to put numbers out here in the blog world. It makes it all really real. I wanted to do it though, because real people have real race times. I might make my goal, I might not, but I'll share either way!
Goal #1 - To Finish
Goal #2 - To Have Fun
Goal #3 - A realistic time goal
Goal #4 - A God-sized time goal.
I'm hoping I can nail the first 2 goals for sure. My 3rd goal is 2:30. I hope this is realistic, but I'm really not sure. I haven't run more than 7 miles and this course is hilly. My God-Sized goal would be under 2:20. Mostly, I'm really excited to participate in this iconic Fort Collins race with the guy that got me started on this whole running life - my Dad!
I'm not really sure how to "train" this last week before the race, since the whole training thing pretty much crumbled away when I left for Hawaii a month ago. I'm thinking I'm just going to do a few shorter runs, get a few good sessions of yoga in and pray for a strong race day!
how about you?
How do you set goals for a race?
Have you ever run a race without much training? Please - give me some encouraging stories!!!
It's great to see you! I'm Alyssa and I blog about all the things I've found "essential" in my life as a fit mama and football coach's wife. You'll find all kinds of fun stuff here like workouts, oily info, football stories and more!
