Here we are, August 1st and you all know what that means....FOOTBALL TIME!
As a college football coaching family, our year pretty much revolves around the different "football seasons". There's more than 1 football season, you say? Well, yep. We've got Fall Camp, Actual Season, Post Season Play (hopefully), Recruiting Season, Spring Ball, did I mention recruiting season? Oh yeah that happens all year long.
But we start to get really excited when August rolls around because it's the real deal football time. I love taking the girls to practices and games, and I love seeing the spark of passion that lights up in my coach hubby's eyes when he gets back on the field.
I was reading back on some old blog posts of mine and found one from a few seasons ago that still really rings true to me. It was about supporting my coach through a healthy season. I know not every wife has the time or ability to do this, but I really try to take it upon myself to set my coaching hubby up for success during his season. You might want to check my old post out too - mostly for the funny comics I posted! Is it bad when your own blog posts make you laugh? I digress.
Last year, I have to admit, I didn't do much in terms of helping my husband out. I had a 10 day old baby and a 2 year old at the first game, and I was pretty much happy to just survive last season. But this season we're ready to roll again and I'm excited about some of the things we do to get ourselves and my coach ready for a winning season.
As far as me and the girls go, I make sure to have a pretty set (and fun!) fall schedule. Staying busy keeps us sane, and I'm excited to have a fall filled with Mommy Strong fitness classes, music class, some visitors and lots of fun little day trips. I also like to plan out a few weekly meals so that we don't end up eating cereal for dinner every night! Finally, we have a tradition of making new team shirts for the girls each year before the first game, so that will be a fun activity to do sometime this month!
As far as supporting my coaching husband, I"ve put together some of the things I send him off with for a healthy and successful season. If you have a coach (or any active, busy, hard working person!) some of these things might just make a perfect care package for them too!
Obviously, this initial stash won't last the whole season. I send lunches (and breakfasts and dinners usually) as well as healthy snacks like hard boiled eggs throughout the season too.
The Coach gave me list of stuff he needed for the locker room. I don't ask many questions, I just buy the list!
This makes my heart so happy. My husband Mr. Tough Football Guy was really skeptical of essential oils when I first ordered them. Fast forward to now...he asked for a diffuser in his office, uses oils every day and has been asking me to send samples in for other coaches!

It's getting HOT HOT HOT here in Texas. It was already warming up in Colorado before we left, but the heat index of 104 and high humidity has hit us like a TON OF BRICKS since we've returned home. Miss Mak was actually crying about the heat while we were walking the 10 feet to our car this afternoon.
I know girl, I know.
This morning while we were running (and by running, I mean slowly slogging with a 100lb stroller and a dog through 90 degree heat), I was thinking out loud and said "it's too hot to run...I'm going to have to start running in the dark!". Well tonight, while my conniving 2 year old was delaying bedtime, she said "Mom, it's dark! Let's go for a run!". I'll admit, I almost took her up on her offer.
So, what's a mom to do when you're in the dead heat of summer, but you've gotta run to keep your sanity?
Here are a few tips:

1. Run in the Dark. Take the advice of a 2 year old. Be sure to practice safe running in the dark by taking a friend, wearing reflective gear or lights, and running in safe areas. Typically (at least in places other than South Texas), it will actually be slightly cooler in the early morning or late evening hours.
2. Change your plan. Stick with lower intensity runs during the hottest parts of the day if you can't avoid it. Save your intervals for the shade, early mornings or inside.
3. Stay Hydrated. When you're running in extreme heat, it's really, really important to stay hydrated. I like adding a drop of wild orange oil to my water sometimes to change it up, and often mix in some Momsanity BCAA's or Emergen-C into my water bottle post-run to aid in recovery.
4. Wear light clothing. Both lightweight AND light colored. Finding good breathable material that is light colored will help keep your body temperature down. And don't forget sunscreen for your exposed arms/legs/face!!
5. Use peppermint oil. This is one of my favorite oils for runners, because it helps with respiratory function, blood flow and can soothe tummy troubles. But when it's super hot, my favorite way to use it is by putting a drop on the back of my neck! It's INSTANTLY cooling, and can actually help lower your core temperature.
6. Find a treadmill. If it's just too dang hot, take it inside. I hate running on treadmills as much as the next person, but if you have access to one, it's not a bad idea to get some quality runs in when the heat just won't quit.

In both of my pregnancies and while I'm nursing, I try to pay extra attention to what I’m putting in my body. A variety of healthy foods, lots of water and a high quality daily supplement. What goes into my body goes into my girls’ bodies, so that definitely makes me want to make good choices. Plus, it’s important for me to be fueling my body well so I can continue “mommin’” the best I can! But how do we REALLY know if we are providing them all of the nutrients they need? Not everything has glaring signs of deficiency.

I only needed a few drops of my first morning milk (no food or supplements yet) onto a little card. They actually mailed me everything I needed ahead of time, with really easy to follow instructions.
I collected my sample, dropped it on the card, placed it in the the provided bag, put everything back in the box and shipped it off with the free shipping label. All of the shipping was free! Then I just had to wait a week or so to receive my results via email.
Dun da dun….my levels came in at Optimal! I was actually a little surprised considering the statistics, but really overjoyed! I’m so glad my girlie is getting lots of DHA for that little brain to grow!
