Here we are, August 1st and you all know what that means....FOOTBALL TIME!
As a college football coaching family, our year pretty much revolves around the different "football seasons". There's more than 1 football season, you say? Well, yep. We've got Fall Camp, Actual Season, Post Season Play (hopefully), Recruiting Season, Spring Ball, did I mention recruiting season? Oh yeah that happens all year long.
But we start to get really excited when August rolls around because it's the real deal football time. I love taking the girls to practices and games, and I love seeing the spark of passion that lights up in my coach hubby's eyes when he gets back on the field.
I was reading back on some old blog posts of mine and found one from a few seasons ago that still really rings true to me. It was about supporting my coach through a healthy season. I know not every wife has the time or ability to do this, but I really try to take it upon myself to set my coaching hubby up for success during his season. You might want to check my old post out too - mostly for the funny comics I posted! Is it bad when your own blog posts make you laugh? I digress.
Last year, I have to admit, I didn't do much in terms of helping my husband out. I had a 10 day old baby and a 2 year old at the first game, and I was pretty much happy to just survive last season. But this season we're ready to roll again and I'm excited about some of the things we do to get ourselves and my coach ready for a winning season.
As far as me and the girls go, I make sure to have a pretty set (and fun!) fall schedule. Staying busy keeps us sane, and I'm excited to have a fall filled with Mommy Strong fitness classes, music class, some visitors and lots of fun little day trips. I also like to plan out a few weekly meals so that we don't end up eating cereal for dinner every night! Finally, we have a tradition of making new team shirts for the girls each year before the first game, so that will be a fun activity to do sometime this month!
As far as supporting my coaching husband, I"ve put together some of the things I send him off with for a healthy and successful season. If you have a coach (or any active, busy, hard working person!) some of these things might just make a perfect care package for them too!
Obviously, this initial stash won't last the whole season. I send lunches (and breakfasts and dinners usually) as well as healthy snacks like hard boiled eggs throughout the season too.
The Coach gave me list of stuff he needed for the locker room. I don't ask many questions, I just buy the list!
This makes my heart so happy. My husband Mr. Tough Football Guy was really skeptical of essential oils when I first ordered them. Fast forward to now...he asked for a diffuser in his office, uses oils every day and has been asking me to send samples in for other coaches!
He even had the idea of creating a "Football Season Survival Kit" for coaches with all of his favorite doTERRA products! He has seen how much these products have helped him, and I love that he wants other coaches to experience it too!

It's time for a little football here on the ol' Home Field blog! I don't post a lot about being a football wife because - hey, it's my husband's job just like your husband has a job. It comes with it's own set of struggles and perks! While it's a demanding schedule, I wouldn't trade our football life and football family for the world! I do like to share little peeks into our little football family life from time to time though...so here we go...

I was planning to post about Spring Football (the 4 weeks in March/April where college football teams get to do official practices and scrimmages) while it was happening but apparently I missed the ball on that one. So I guess y'all will just get a recap!
We wrapped up our spring ball season last Saturday with a BEAUTIFUL evening spring game. Seriously, you couldn't have asked for better weather. My kids happened to cooperate the whole time as well (I know, a miracle) which made for a perfect night!
Spring Ball is actually one of my favorite times of the football year. As a college coaching family, we have lots of "football seasons". We have pre-season, season, recruiting, conditioning, spring ball, recruiting and camps. Yeah. If you though a football coach just worked Aug- Nov, you thought wrong! But I love spring ball for a few reasons. First, we get to enjoy some football after a few month break from the official season, and it's so fun to get back on the field! Second, at least here in Texas, the practices are actually cool enough to attend, so I get to bring the kiddos more often.
Unfortunately this season, our team held many of their practices in the evening. Not only did this mean that we didn't get to go as much, it also meant I had lots of solo parenting bedtimes in the past month!
Luckily, we stayed busy and we made time to get to the field or to practices as much as possible during the day.
This was my first spring ball with 2 kids - who both happen to be ON THE MOVE!! No more Ergo pack and sleeping newborn (that was short lived!!).
Here are a few fun things I did with the girls during spring ball:
While Spring Football is fun, I'm excited for SUMMER now! Summer means some extra time with my hubby, a chance for vacations and no more solo bedtimes!!

Gah! Feeding my coach. It's got to be one of the hardest parts of football season for me. It wouldn't have to be all that hard, except for the fact that I really want my hubby to eat WELL during football season! I also don't want to spend a fortune on prepared foods or him going out to eat. He works long, stressful hours, spends time traveling and definitely gets worn down. If I can at least fuel him with healthy food, I feel like I'm doing my part to help the team succeed!
Now, every team/school/staff is different, but everywhere we've been so far my husband has eaten 3 meals a day at school AT LEAST 4 days a week. That means really doing something thinking and planning ahead when it comes to having food prepared and ready for him! I'll be honest - some weeks I really fail at this. He comes home at night looking for food to bring the next day and I'm like - "there's an apple...how about some cheerios?".
One of the things that I've done that really helps is make sure I plan several meals throughout the week for me and the girls and I make plenty for leftovers. That way, we can have them the following day for lunch and the coach can take them for at least one meal too. I try to do at least one meal a week in the crockpot. I've also found that pre-making 1 large egg dish for a week's worth of breakfasts has been a huge time/sanity-saver.
These egg bakes aren't the prettiest...and I'm definitely no food photographer! But they taste good!!
Another lifesaver this year has been finding a good shake mix for him to take as a snack in the afternoon. If you know my husband you know he is a coffee FANATIC and drinks it all day long. When I heard about CLICK protein mix and had the chance to try it for a review, I KNEW my husband was going to be excited about it. It's turned into one of the best things I can send with him each day! So here's the deal - they've taken a great protein powder (16 grams/serving) and added 2 shots of REAL espresso for awesome coffee flavor and a kick of caffeine! There is also a great boost of essential vitamins and minerals so it's totally suitable for a meal replacement shake too! Click comes in mocha, caramel and vanilla flavors. My coach is a total mocha fan so that was his hands down favorite. But the said they were all really good! He's been taking it to work every day and likes mixing it up with hot water for a mocha latte-type drink. We've also tried it blended with ice at home! All yummy! Coach claims that it's been keeping him full all afternoon while giving him that caffeine jolt he needs to get through practice and late night film watching! I'm just thankful that there is 1 less snack I need to pack each day!
