A few weeks ago I took off for 2 days on a much need girls getaway weekend in Austin, TX! I met up with two of my favorite people and we packed as much as we could into a day and half. First I have to say - I freaking love Austin. I wish I lived a little closer - I think I would be there constantly if it were a more reasonable day trip. I can't wait to take my family back to enjoy all of the kid friendly stuff sometime soon! But back to girls weekend. I thought I would share what 3 fitness loving, gluten free eating hard working girls did for their weekend away!
First I have to mention that this was the first overnight (let alone 2 night!) trip I have taken away from Miss Mak. She of course was in good hands with some friends and her Daddy but it still wasn't easy to leave! When she was crying when I left my heart just broke! She did wonderfully though, and her mama came back refreshed and excited to see her!
We got in Friday evening and spent a few hours out at The Domain. This is a really nice, upscale outdoor shopping center that totally made me feel like I was a country girl in the big city. But it was fun to window shop and check out H&M and eat some yummy food! We had dinner at Gloria's. There were a lot of GF options (as most Mexican restaurants have) and I settled on some enchiladas! I've been totally living it up while I can tolerate dairy during pregnancy! The other girls got chicken and shrimp tacos. Everything was yummy - but the atmosphere was crazy loud! Apparently we're getting old and cranky. We really just wanted to talk and we could barely hear each other across the table!
We woke up Saturday morning and made a quick breakfast at the apartment. It's so funny when you get 3 health-conscious/allergic girls together....we all brought food! We had eggs and oats and GF toast! Then we busted out the workout clothes (and found some long sleeves because it was chilly in the morning!) and headed out!
Amanda is mid-half marathon training (she's doing Yellowstone!) so she had a long run to complete, so Lindsey and I decided to head to the lake with her and get a long walk in! It was seriously the PERFECT morning. Even though I spent YEARS in Colorado, I couldn't get over the beautiful sunshine, peaceful water and THOUSANDS of fit people out for their morning workout! I don't think I've ever seen so many BOB Strollers or dogs in once place ever! We walked for over an hour and a half and soon after we began were peeling off our long sleeves. I even got a little sunburned...oops! It was so fun to get out and move and watch rowers and kayakers and dodge runners and cyclists! If I could spend every Saturday morning doing that, I would! We checked out the bat bridge (of course there was nothing to see at that time of day) and found some bathrooms (hello preggo girl along!) at a little cafe.
After Amanda finished her run we headed through this beautiful neighborhood and up to a little trail overlooking the city. Basically - we looked down at the river and I picked the house I'm going to live in when The Coach gets a job at UT (#goals). It was beautiful up there! We were all pretty wiped out AND HUNGRY after our workouts so we ventured out to find some food!
We discovered Wildwood Bakehouse and YOU GUYS. If you're gluten free this place is a MUST STOP in Austin. We were all ridiculously giddy and crazy looking over the massive menu that was 100% GLUTEN FREE. And it was normal stuff like sandwiches and burgers and onion rings and salads and pizza....I got a BLT on french bread with sweet potato chips. It was delicious, but nothing compared to what we found in the bakery inside after our meal. I may have taken a few things to go (aka practically one of everything). They had cakes and muffins and cupcakes and cookies and bars....wow. All were labeled if they were dairy free as well. We got our second wind (aka plenty of sugar and caffeine) and were on our way!
We hit up Congress Street next. Mostly, we were on a mural painting hunt and we found quite a few! We only went in a few touristy shops. It was way fun finding murals and walking around - it was definitely the most tourist part of our trip. We drove by the Capital too - I'm a Texan now so it was cool to see!

Can you believe we still had time to go lay out by the pool when we got back to the apartment? It's amazing what you can accomplish in a day without littles around! I haven't laid by a pool and closed my eyes in approximately 21 months and 2 days (but who's counting?) so I took full advantage of the kid free pool time!
We were planning to go to a Texas country concert that evening, because what's a trip to Austin without some live country? But we ended up nixing those plans in exchange for Thai takeout and chick flicks. I think watching The Longest Ride counts for some country lovin', doesn't it?
The next morning we made our quick and easy breakfasts again (I may have had leftover Thai...) and then packed up. On our way out of town we stopped at the flagship Whole Foods downtown because - we're nerds. It was fun, but it made me remember that I actually don't really like Whole Foods at all! It was huge and expensive and their coffee sucks. Sorry WF! We found a few things and got kombucha for the road and then headed home!
The drive home was beautiful - it's blue bonnet season and all of the other wild flowers lining the highway were awesome too! It was an awesome whirlwind trip but getting a huge hug from my baby when I got home made me happy to be back! Don't get me wrong, I've got a whole list of things I want to do next time I get to Austin!
